Maricopa County animal shelters are bursting at the seams.

While that is a recurring struggle for the county’s animal services, the holiday season often provides some relief.

Kim Powell with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control says that is not the case this year, as it is sheltering about 900 dogs.

"Normally in December, it’s pretty easy for us. We have way less dogs, we have high adoption numbers and not a lot of dogs coming in, so it's usually a great time of year for us," Powell said.

Earlier this week, the county launched its “12 Days of Foster” event, to help get more dogs from temporary homes into permanent ones. It runs through Dec. 24.
