Record travel expected between Christmas and New Year’s

This holiday season could be one for the record books.

AAA expects 7.5 million people will fly over a 10-day period starting Dec. 23.  That tops the previous record set in 2019, just before the pandemic.

Nationwide, 115 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home. In Arizona, it’s more than 2.2 million with most traveling by car.

“The travel outline for the year-end holidays echoes what we’ve been seeing in travel throughout 2023," said Brian Ng, senior vice president of membership and travel marketing for AAA Arizona. “Despite high costs, more Americans are prioritizing creating memories with loved ones and exploring new destinations.”

Transportation data provider INRIX predicts traffic will be lightest on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, along with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Heaviest traffic is expected Dec. 23 and Dec. 28.
