ASU has announced a partnership with the artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI, the architect behind ChatGPT. According to ASU, this collaboration is the first between OpenAI and a higher education institution.

Kyle Bowen is the deputy chief information officer for ASU.

“We've also seen impactful uses of generative AI in writing courses, for example, in the supporting of students. And so there are a lot of different applications. And part of what we're looking forward to out of this partnership is exploring a wide variety of different use cases," he said.

According to university President Michael Crow, ASU officials are “optimistic” about the latest technological tools offered by AI.

“ASU has been working in the generative AI space really, you know, for more than the past year. And working, bringing together our faculty, our researchers, our students to kind of explore different use cases," he said.

Bowen says ASU wants to “champion responsible innovation” and support “ethical uses of the technology.”

ASU has explored using AI in the past, including its launch of an AI technology team to create further tools. In February, university faculty and staff will produce submissions showing ways to implement generative AI.
