A bill that would prohibit a business from labeling a product as “meat” unless it came directly from an animal is moving through the state House. 

The USDA allowed for the sale of lab-grown meat last year, but the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Quang Nguyen, says FDA labels don’t adequately inform consumers.

"As a consumer, when you walk into the grocery store you ought to be able to tell if this is ‘moo-moo’ meat or lab-grown meat. And I think that's important for us to know," Nguyen said. 

Members of the state House Committee on Land, Agriculture and Rural Affairs passed the bill on a 6-3 vote.

It now goes to the House floor.
