Arizona’s resignation rate has mostly gotten back to normal, following a period of people quitting their jobs at unusually high rates.

Arizona’s arc mirrored a national trend tied to the pandemic, as employers provided more hiring incentives in a competitive hiring market during “The Great Resignation.”

In November last year, Arizona's resignation rate was 2.7. That is down from 3.0 a year prior.

“And so generally when we see the the quits rate rising, that is generally an indication of people’s optimism of being able to you know voluntarily leave one position to find another position,” said Doug Walls, the labor market information director for the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

The slowdown in resignations comes as the state economy has seen other signs of going back to normal after the pandemic.

Unemployment remained at 4.3% from November into December, which was normal for pre-pandemic levels.

Walls said unemployment levels ticked up through 2023, following its historic low in May.

“I think it speaks to just a more healthy labor market where we do see people entering and exiting the labor force, you know, other times people might leave one job for opportunities in another," Walls said. 

Despite the slowdown, Walls said Arizona was one of four states to see their employment levels grow beyond pre-pandemic levels.
