The Arizona House Transportation Committee has approved a measure that would waive driver’s license fees for people experiencing homelessness.

House Bill 2143 would exempt people from paying the $12 fee needed for a license if they don’t have a current address or their nearest address is a homeless shelter.

House Transportation Committee Chair David Cook is the bill’s sponsor. 

“This is about solving the issue about getting people identified and in the system, getting them the ability to move on with their lives," he said.

Other Republicans on the committee expressed concern about an amendment that would make non-operating IDs valid for eight years. 

Cook said that would put all documents on the same timeline as the travel ID renewal, but opponents believe it could open a window for voter fraud.

The bill now goes to the House Rules Committee.
