Last week, the state House passed a bill that would prohibit a business from labeling a product as meat unless it came directly from an animal.

Rep. Alexander Kolodin was the sole Republican to vote against it. He argued the language of the bill is too vague and inconsistent.

"If I were to take, say, veggie burgers and I were to say 'meaty veggie burgers,' is that misrepresenting the product as meat?" Kolodin asked.

While some Democrats in the chamber voted in favor of the bill, others said the Food and Drug Administration already regulates lab-grown meats.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
