The Flagstaff City Council has approved more than $3 million to help build 139 affordable rental units downtown.

The funding came from the voter approved Proposition 442 in 2022 that allows Flagstaff to use general bonds to create rental and potential ownership opportunities for city residents.

The $3.3 million will go toward senior housing for those making 80% of median household income. Another is intended for families and individuals who earn up to 60% of the median.

The incentive program comes after the city declared a housing emergency during the pandemic as local residents were priced out of the Flagstaff market.
