The president of the Navajo Nation said he wants the tribal government to pass uranium transportation regulations to restrict uranium from being transported across tribal lands.

President Buu Nygren addressed his remarks to the Navajo Nation council earlier this week.

"I asked the honorable resource and development committee to pass uranium transport regulations that Navajo EPA DOJ will have ready for approval within the next month," he said.

Nygren said the regulations will force mining companies to notify the tribe before transporting uranium across the Navajo Nation and provide a bond in case of an accident.

The Energy Fuels mining company recently began mining uranium just south of the Grand Canyon and ships the material to its plant in Utah.

Nygren said the tribe, the U.S. Forest Service and Coconino County supervisors are working on a plan to receive advance warning of uranium shipments in the area.
