Recent flooding has left the Mexican port city of Guaymas devastated, damaging homes and leaving hundreds of people homeless. Now, people across its sister city of Mesa are trying to lend a hand.

The help is coming in the form of canned food, diapers, bottled water and other necessities, according to the Mesa Sister Cities Organization. So far, the Mesa Rotary Club, the chamber of and Benedictine University have been leading the charge.

At a press conference, Mesa Mayor John Giles thanked all those helping out.

"But this is really such a devastating situation, this needs to just be the beginning of our response," he said. "And over the next few weeks and months, it needs to be a sustained effort."

The City of Mesa may soon be part of that effort, too. Guaymas is in need of heavy equipment to help clear away debris. And Giles said Mesa officials are looking at donating an old Caterpillar the city no longer needs.
