Businesses lining 19th Avenue in Phoenix where light rail construction has been ongoing for more than two years will soon have relief. The end is near.

Corinne Holliday with Valley Metro said the northwest extension is 90 percent complete, and vehicle testing will start before the year is out.

"Testing occurs with system, power and signal," said Holliday. "So during testing, Valley Metro will test vehicle clearance at stations, the overhead electrification systems, traffic signal coordination and the switches that allow the train to move from track to track."

Holliday said Valley Metro will continue testing until March 2016, when the light rail officially opens. In the meantime, Valley Metro and City of Phoenix officials will celebrate the progress of the extension this Saturday at the Dunlap Avenue Park-and-Ride.
