The Arizona Department of Health recently released its 2015 Food Safety Annual Report. The report contains information such as the number of foodborne illnesses reported and food safety inspections conducted. But for the most part, what’s inside is business as usual.

The 42 page report contains all sorts of interesting information. There was a 60 percent decrease in the number of E. coli cases, but a 200 percent increase in Listeriosis. That had to do with an outbreak of listeria in prepackaged caramel apples earlier this year. There was information about inspections at public pools and facilities that bottle water. The report also found a spike in the number of reported foodborne illnesses.

Jessica Rigler with the Department of Health said the number of reported illnesses can vary from year to year. "So this year across the state, we received just over a thousand foodborne complaints...about a 40 percent increase incomplaints from last year," she said.

Rigler can’t explain the uptick, though it may have to do with awareness-- more people know they can call their county health department. Rigler says DHS conducted more than 80,000 inspections in fiscal year 2015.
