It’s been a strange couple of weeks for Stephen Banta, the outgoing CEO of Valley Metro.

He resigned just before Thanksgiving as reports were surfacing that he was receiving taxpayer-funded reimbursements for flying first class and eating at upscale restaurants, among other things. After comments indicated that Banta may rescind his resignation, the two boards that oversee Maricopa County’s bus and light rail system held a special meeting this week to accept his resignation.

Craig Harris of the Arizona Republic, the reporter who did a lot of the heavy lifting on the story, spoke about the issue. Arizona State University management professor Gerry Keim spoke about the differences between the “business of government” and the “business of corporate America.”
