State lawmakers have approved a bill that would allow the attorney general to withhold state-shared revenues from any city that passes an ordinance that’s in conflict with state law.

Republican Representative Warren Petersen of Gilbert is one of the measure’s sponsors. He told his colleagues' cities to ask lawmakers to approve bills they want, and then enforce those laws.

"When we come up with ideas from constituents, small business owners, that if they don't want to enforce them they just choose not to follow these laws. This is simple. This is an enforcement mechanism so that the laws are followed," he said.

Both the House and Senate’s approval of SB 1487 was generally along party lines. One of the bill’s critics is Ken Strobeck, executive director of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.
