Tuesday is the first day to buy some kinds of fireworks in Arizona. But a new state law defines what fireworks are allowed in the state.

The law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer last month sets up specific periods for the sale and use of fireworks in Maricopa and Pima counties. Residents can buy certain kinds of fireworks between May 20 and July 6 and between December 10 and January 3, and can use them basically around July Fourth and New Years’.

People who violate laws related to fireworks could face a fine of up to $1,000.

The law also more clearly defines which kinds of fireworks are allowed and which aren’t — ground or hand-held sparklers are OK, but firecrackers, bottle rockets and other aerial types are not.

Fire officials are predicting an above-average fire season for Arizona, and many public lands instituted fire restrictions earlier than normal, due to the dry conditions.
