A Congressional hearing will be held Wednesday related to the Phoenix VA hospital and an alleged “secret list” that may have covered up chronic issues.

The hearing will examine a subpoena issued earlier this month probing the VA’s admitted destruction of what may have been the list described by whistleblowers. It’s alleged that up to 40 vets may have died while waiting for care.

VA patient Alexander Peters spent 15 years in the Coast Guard and Marine Corps. He said he’s ready to see more consequences for VA medical staff who aren’t doing their jobs well.

"Why not hold people accountable — accountable for their actions?" he asked. "If you’re a car mechanic and you mess up fixing a car, you’re held responsible. If you’re a doctor or a nurse, and you work for the VA, well, you know, 'It’s OK, they work for the VA. Let’s just forget about it.'"

The Phoenix VA is one of 26 VA facilities across the country that is being investigated for issues like delays in care and falsified records.
