Fire crews are battling several large, un-contained fires throughout the West. Although none of those fires in Arizona, hundreds of those firefighters are coming from here.

Summer monsoons have helped reduce Arizona’s wildfire risk, but that doesn’t mean firefighters are done for the season. Wildfires are burning in California, Idaho, Utah and Montana. Mary Zabinski is a public information officer with the Southwest Coordination Center. She said Arizona fire personnel have been reassigned across the West.

"So, at last count, we had more or less about 650 fire personnel who were still fighting fires throughout the west," Zabinski said. "And about 380 of those, almost 400, are the type one and type two crews, the hand crews."

Zabinski said fire crews are considered national resources. As fire season fades in one part of the county, firefighters are often assigned to active fires elsewhere.
