Adults 65 and older are at an increased risk of committing suicide. Those numbers are particularly high among Caucasian males.

In 2015, 238 older adults committed suicide in Arizona. That’s according to a recent study by Arizona State University’s Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety.

“You know, older divorced adults were among the highest and basically I think all this has to do with being alone, being depressed, not having the social support systems,” said Vincent Webb, with ASU. Webb said the suicide rate among veterans was four times higher than non-veterans.

Kelli Donley Williams is with Arizona Healthcare Cost Containment System and the state’s suicide prevention coordinator. “All three VA hospitals in Arizona are making a concerted, diligent effort at the moment in coordinating their efforts with community efforts to try and prevent suicide of veterans,” Donley said.

Donley Williams said this means they’re working with health care providers, therapists and church groups to make sure veterans know what services are available at the VA. Asked if an already embattled VA would be able to provide this kind of help, Donely Williams said she could not speak for them.
