The U.S. Forest Service closed the Ladders Bald Eagle breeding area along the Verde River just south of Camp Verde starting Thursday. The closure is expected to last through June 30.

The area could reopen sooner if nest failure occurs and re-nesting isn’t attempted, according to a statement by Prescott National Forest.

The closure is necessary to reduce human disturbances, which could lead to nesting eagles abandoning their eggs or the loss of young.

River rafters will be allowed to pass on the river but are prohibited from stopping; other activities like hunting, target shooting, fishing and hiking are also not allowed during this time.

Violators could face a fine or imprisonment.
