A plan is underway to remove soil that was contaminated with lead at the former site of the Prescott Sportsmen’s Club Shooting Range.

The club leased the site on federal land. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service will pay for the cleanup, which is estimated to cost around $700,000, though that price tag could go up depending on what crews find.

"So actually when they get in there and start to do the work it could change a little bit, so they might have to go deeper in some areas or go wider depending on what the contractor actually finds when they’re digging up the dirt," said Debbie Maneely with the Prescott National Forest:

Maneely said the contaminated soil poses no risk to humans or livestock at this time. She said the cleanup is expected to take about two months.
