Last year, a new drug began killing people on the East Coast. Officials now realize it’s led to overdoses in the Valley, as well.

It’s known as Pink, and it’s one of many synthetic opioids people can order online.

“These substances are easily available to anyone with a smart phone, essentially,” said Erica Curry, a spokesperson with the Phoenix Field Division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA recently discovered this drug has led to three overdoses in the Valley.

Curry said Pink kills you the same way heroin does.

“Your body begins to, kind of, calm itself and relax itself. The muscles relax. Your heart slows its beating. Your respiration slows,” she said. “And you just, you just die.”

Curry said many who use drugs like Pink first got hooked on legal prescription medication, and that people aren’t always aware of when they transition from patient to addict.

“I think the important message to parents and to the community is to be aware,” she said, “to be aware what’s going on with your loved ones, to be aware what’s arriving on your doorstep, and to be aware that this could happen to you and your family. No one’s safe from it anymore.”

Curry said Pink is seven or eight times more powerful than heroin.
