There are smart cars, smartphones and increasingly, smart cities.  And that means an increasing demand for tech-trained employees.

Global research firm McKinsey & Company said smart-city growth is on the rise, with the industry projected to be a $400 billion market by 2020, spreading to more than 600 metropolitan areas worldwide. McKinsey’s research also says those 600 smart cities will be responsible for 60 percent of global-economic output by 2025.

Trade publication Tech Republic reports there’s a growing need for universities and trade schools to offer tech-specific programs for cities looking to innovate.

Arizona State University is one of a handful of higher-education institutions the report names for filling the tech need.
