Reverse Job Fair In Phoenix Turns Tables On Employers

The roles will be reversed at a job fair in Phoenix on Thursday. Rather than job seekers moving from company to company, employers will come to them. It’s the first time the Arizona Department of Economic Security’s Division of Rehabilitation Services has tried a reverse job fair.
“I’m asking some people to put pictures of them working or engaged in work,” said Tim Stump, employer liaison for the department.
Stump says job seekers may be blind, deaf, have a mental illness or physical impairment. He says about 50 people will get their own table to show off their skills and personalities.
“One of the job seekers she told me she’s theming her whole table on Starburst, the candy, so hopefully when an employer talks to her they’ll remember they got the Starburst from her or remember the colors she used,” he said. “A lot of people tend to use like a display board from maybe a science fair, and they’ll put their name on it and what kind of work they’re looking for.”
Stump said about 20 employers are expected to participate, offering information about customer service, warehouse distribution and food-preparation jobs.
“As lot of them (employers) once they gathered what it was and that they didn’t have to set up a table, they seem to be really on board,” he said. “As a matter of fact, several companies are bringing multiple recruiters to check it out.”
While the job fair was planned for people with disabilities, it is open to any job seeker. The fair will be held Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DES office at 515 N. 51st Ave., Phoenix.
