National Academies Outline Guidelines On Human Gene Editing

The National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine have issued a report that delves into the issue of when, and under what circumstances, it could be OK to use genetic editing tools on human embryos.

The technology could eliminate diseases that are caused by a gene mutation, but critics worry about it being used to get rid of other traits that are just considered undesirable.

With me to talk about what the academies said and what it means is Valerie Gutmann Koch, director of Law and Ethics for the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago.
