Despite the presence of some lead characters of color in the new batch of Star Wars films and some favorite comic-book heroes finding different incarnations with younger and more diverse versions, there has long been a noticeable lack of African-Americans represented in science fiction.

The movement known as Afrofuturism has been trying to counter that.

Bryan Carter, associate professor at the University of Arizona, currently teaches Afrofuturism and Black Speculative Fiction Through the Ages.
