A bill that would give local businesses up to 90 days to fix violations stemming from the Americans with Disabilities Act has passed the Arizona Senate and is now in the House.

Twenty-two lawmakers were in favor of SB 1198; eight were against it. Now advocates are hoping a separate measure from the House will win the day.

Larry Wanger is with the Arizona Statewide Independent Living Council. He says House Bill 2504 is less egregious than 1198, even though it also gives businesses time to fix ADA-related violations.

"The language in the amendment that was added is ambiguous at best," Wanger said.

And while Wanger and others are concerned about that, Wanger said, "we look forward to continue dialogue we feel the House bill represents a better approach that frankly was not included in 1198."

HB 1198’s sponsor, Arizona Sen. John Kavanagh, says a mandatory grace period will ensure businesses comply with the ADA because they will be forced to fix any violations.
