An MSF staff member gives instruction to mothers on how to use the food supplement MSF teams have provided them for their young children.

Doctors Without Borders has projects in more than 60 countries around the world. Now the agency is here in Arizona this week looking for aid workers.

The medical humanitarian organization is looking to fill a range of positions from doctors and nurses to administrators and mechanics.

Doctors Without Borders works closely with low-resource communities and developing countries to provide free medical care. Rogier van Helmond has been with the organization since 1995 and travels to places like Nigeria and South Sudan.

“It’s people who are used to working in resource poor settings where you have to be resourceful, where you have to be flexible or people who have traveled a lot already in developing countries. That’s the kind of people we’re looking for," van Helmond said. 

Van Helmond says recruits often have questions about working in dangerous areas, but he says he feels safer working for Doctors Without Borders than he did in the army.

The organization continuously recruits new workers and has about 3,000 staff members working in the field at any given time, as well as 30,000 local workers.

The first event is Tuesday in Flagstaff and the second is scheduled for Thursday in Phoenix. Both recruiting events are scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Flagstaff event will be at Coconino County Public Library, and the Phoenix event is at Burton Barr Public Library. They will include a presentation and Q&A session.
