USPS Plans To Fully Close Tucson Mail Processing Center

The United States Postal Service is carrying through with its plan to fully close its mail processing operation center in Tucson. That means starting next April, mail will be processed in Phoenix instead. The USPS had already closed a portion of its operations in February 2013. Peter Haas is a spokesman for the USPS. He says his agency has seen a decline in mail volume over the last several years.

"We simply have more processing operation, equipment and facilities than is needed for the lower mail volume that we now process and deliver," Haas said.

Haas says there was a hold on consolidation efforts while the USPS worked with Congress to come up with comprehensive postal reform legislation. Nothing came of those efforts.
