The Colorado River Trail at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Starting Monday, a popular trail near the bottom of the Grand Canyon will be closed for at least a week for repairs. It’s one of several trails within the Canyon that have recently been closed due to rockslides and instability.

This particular section is called the Colorado River Trail, and, even if that doesn’t sound familiar, if you’ve been the bottom of the Canyon, you’ve likely walked on it.

Starting at Pipe Creek, it connects the Bright Angel Trail to the Silver Bridge, which leads to Phantom Ranch and the Bright Angel Campground.

Until the trail reopens, the simplest way for hikers to go from the South Rim across the Colorado is to take the South Kaibab Trail all the way down. The South Kaibab is shorter than the Bright Angel, but it’s much steeper and there is no water available on the route.
