The Grand Canyon National park is millions of dollars behind in maintenance upkeep and that has conservationists worried.

It’s not for lack of visitors.

The U.S. National Park system saw 330 million people at its parks, monuments and other sites. That’s up more than 7 percent from the year before.

But, the wear and tear on the parks has led to nearly $12 billion in deferred maintenance.

The Grand Canyon takes up $371 million of that tab.

Conservationists are worried it is bolstering conservative arguments to privatize the national parks and defund other Interior Department programs.

President Trump has proposed a 12 percent cut to the department and conservative think tanks are consulting lawmakers on options to franchise the U.S. parks.
