State regulators will be hearing about the future of the Arizona coal market Thursday.

The session at the Arizona Corporation Commission comes as uncertainty surrounds the future of the West’s largest coal-fired plant, the Navajo Generating Station.

Regional Utilities announced they will not renew their lease in 2019 because they can buy cheaper energy elsewhere.

Officials from the Navajo Nation are urging the federal government to help keep the plant open, possibly by subsidizing coal from the nearby mine.

The plant could close even sooner than 2019, if a new agreement isn’t reached by the summer.

While the corporation commission doesn’t directly oversee the plant, some on the commission have expressed concern about its closure.

The president of the Navajo Nation and representatives of Peabody Energy will be giving presentations at the workshop.
