NAU Shooter Testifies In His Own Defense

The prosecution has rested its case against the man accused of shooting four people — and killing one — at Northern Arizona University. Now, it’s the defense’s turn. Steven Jones testified in his own defense Thursday.
On the stand, Jones said he was punched in the face after getting into a confrontation with a group of drunk people across the street from the NAU campus in the early morning hours of Oct. 9, 2015. Jones said after he was chased from the scene, he panicked, then he went to his car to get his gun.
“I knew that if I didn’t fire right then, I would get seriously hurt or die,” Jones told the court. “There is no doubt in my mind.”
Jones has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Colin Brough. Jones has also pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault in the wounding of three other people. Two of them testified earlier this week, including Kyle Zientek, who said he tried to run away moments before he was shot twice in the back.
