A contract worth a quarter-million dollars could lead to one of the best spots to take a selfie at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Part of Terminal 3’s modernization project will include a pricey pair of sunglasses.

“These lenses will be reflective,” said Ed Lebow, public art program director. “So in this era of selfies, this will become one of the great selfie spots in the airport.”

While recently addressing the city’s Arts Subcommittee, Lebow laid out the design concept for "Aviators."

“It’s 28 feet across. The lenses themselves are about nine feet," said Lebow. "We’re working with the airport team at the moment to sort of determine just how large those lenses can go and fit in the building.”

If the full council approves the plan, the aviator style sunglasses would be assembled in the east atrium inside Terminal Three and serve as a major landmark for arriving passengers.

In the new spaces you’ll be able to view the work from several hundred feet away,” Lebow said. “So if you’re ever lost in the terminal you can point to it and say that’s where I will meet my friends.”

The $225,000 contract for artist Donald Lipski would be funded through the city’s public art program.
