Last week, the Food and Drug Administration announced the start of regulating the amount of nicotine in cigarettes. This comes as Arizonans are also smoking less.

The FDA has a plan to lower nicotine levels in cigarettes to stop smoking addictions. The announcement didn't specify what level of nicotine the cigarettes would be lowered to. But anti-smoking efforts seem to be working, at least in Arizona.

In the last five years, the percentage of smokers in Arizona has gone from 20 percent to 14 percent.

Wayne Tormala is the tobacco bureau chief at Arizona Department of Health Services.

"As people can draw down on their nicotine addiction, then more and more people will make the next step and quit totally," Tormala said.

Tormala says while the FDA plan is a good move, e-cigarette use is on the rise, and e-cigarette users typically take in more nicotine — and that product is still unregulated.
