The White House says there will be no pardon for former Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced at the president’s rally in Phoenix on Tuesday night.

After visiting Yuma on Tuesday morning to tour the U.S.-Mexico border, President Trump flew to Phoenix. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters the president would not be taking any action on a pardon for Joe Arpaio on Tuesday.

Trump fueled speculation earlier this month when he praised the former sheriff’s tough stance on immigration and said he was considering a pardon for him.

Maria Castro is a community organizer at Puente Human Rights Movement. Her group has been opposing Arpaio’s treatment of immigrants for a decade.

“The next thing is dismantling the regime of hate that he had instilled within the Maricopa County jail system," Castro said.

Arpaio’s attorneys say they are still pursuing other challenges to the former sheriff’s misdemeanor conviction. He’s set to be sentenced in October.
