A bug discovered at the border in Nogales has been identified as a destructive wood pest. It's the first time a long-horned beetle has been found in the United States.

It was found in a commercial shipment of fresh cherry tomatoes on Sept. 1. The next day, the produce was fumigated and continued on its way to Texas.

Tracy Filippe is with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Tucson.

While finding this particular beetle is a first for the agency, "we intercept insects and diseases and seeds and plants of concern every day during our inspectionaI process," she said.

Filippe said the agency works with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture to identify insects and plants of concern. The long-horned beetle is worrisome because it could damage forests in this country.
