The Arizona Game and Fish Department and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality have launched a “green light” initiative to identify fish species that may be consumed without limits.

And trout, which has at times been a concern because of mercury levels, has been deemed safe for consumption.

Mark Dahlberg, manager of the water quality program for Arizona Game and Fish, said “people have always eaten the trout but we thought it would be important that we take the fish that we do stock and have them analyzed and have the Environmental Protection Agency analyze those fish to make sure that the mercury was low and they are.”

According to Dahlberg, the bass found in the Colorado River are also safe for eating.
