Coconino County Health officials confirmed their first case of hantavirus this year.

Environmental Health Director Marlene Gaither said determining where the person picked up the virus will be tough.

"This person traveled to numerous locations and so it’s probably going to be very difficult to find where this person was exposed to hantavirus," Gaither said.

The traveler exhibited symptoms after returning home.

Gaither said the hantavirus is transmitted to people who come into contact with or inhale infected urine or fecal droppings from deer mice.

This is only the sixth hantavirus case in the county since 2007.
