Arizona Sen. John McCain’s office says he’s receiving treatment in Washington, DC, for side effects of his therapy for an aggressive form of brain cancer. The announcement was made Wednesday, the same day McCain's daughter discussed her father’s cancer battle on television.

After Meghan McCain began crying on her ABC show “The View,” she was comforted by former Vice President Joe Biden, a guest that episode. Biden’s son Beau died in 2015 from a glioblastoma — the same kind of cancer John McCain was diagnosed with this summer.

Biden, who served with McCain in the Senate, stood up and moved from his seat on the set to sit next to Meghan and hold her hand. He told her not to lose hope and that a medical breakthrough is possible.

John McCain has missed several votes in the Senate this week. In his statement, he said he remains grateful to his physicians for his care and to his friends and supporters for their encouragement. The statement also said he looks forward to returning to work as soon as possible.
