House Republicans are holding hearings this week to discuss President Donald Trump’s arguments for bringing back earmarks.

Trump has claimed it will make government deal-making easier. But, not all Arizona GOP members agree.

“No, absolutely not,” said Arizona Republican Rep. David Schweikert when asked if he agrees with the President.

Historically, Schweikert said, “What was happening before earmarks were banned is it became candy to functionally buy and influence votes.”

If the system worked as it was originally intended, he would support it, “But going back to the bad old days is unacceptable.”

Sen. Jeff Flake is also wary.

“We lost the majority of the House and Senate in 2006,” Flake said. “Largely because of the corruption that came with earmarking.”

When people talk about draining the swamp in Washington, Flake said, “There’s nothing swampier than earmarks.”
