The perennial issue of weapons on college campuses in Arizona is getting another look. Lawmakers are discussing whether policies banning weapons on campus leave students, teachers and faculty vulnerable to crime.

Republican Rep. Travis Grantham wants to by-pass the State Board of Regents' "No Weapons" policy and allow people to carry non-lethal weapons such as pepper spray or stun guns.

"We're not talking about guns," he assured he colleagues, "And, if you read the definition about non-lethal weapons. It's pretty specific. It says anything that's meant to incapacitate somebody who might charge you or come at you."

Grantham said his bill would also include non-lethal weapons under development such as flashlights designed to blind and confuse attackers and high frequency sound weapons that stun.

State lawmakers have tried to pass legislation allowing guns on campuses in the past, but repeatedly failed. Two years ago, they passed a statute allowing firearms on the sidewalks, streets and other public paths through and around campuses.
