Election season is on the way, which means you'll be seeing and hearing a plethora of campaign ads for candidates.

That also means the phrase “I approve this message” will be ubiquitous.

Do those four words really mean anything, though, when it comes to believability of a candidate and his or her promises?

Clayton Critcher, an associate professor at UC Berkeley, looked into that with a colleague and is here to share what he found.
