The ACLU of Arizona has sent demand letters to over 100 charter schools across the state demanding immediate changes to their enrollment policies. 

Under state law, charter schools are required to "enroll all eligible pupils who submit a timely application." But in a December report, the ACLU of Arizona said it found 56 percent of Arizona Charter Schools have policies that discourage the enrollment of certain students.

Anabel Maldonado is the lead organizer for the Demand2Learn Campaign for the ACLU of Arizona. She said some schools discriminate against child behavior.

"They have caps on their special education students that they take," Maldonado said, "and they also are turning away students that have previous discipline behavior."

Maldonado said the group has urged the Arizona State Board of Charter Schools to take action, but it hasn't.

“We’ve been asking of the board to hold these schools into compliance and they have not done anything,” Maldonado said.

The board canceled its monthly meeting on Monday because it says there were no requests up for consideration.
