Phoenix To Repair Historic Norton House
The former home of Arizona’s territorial veterinarian is getting a facelift. The Phoenix City Council approved a grant for repairs to the Norton House.
After Dr. James C. Norton retired in 1912, he started the Norton Dairy on a section of land that ran from Encanto Boulevard to Thomas Road, between 15th and 19th avenues.
Norton built a large, Mission Revival-style home for his family at the northwest corner of 15th and Virginia avenues. After the dairy was sold, most of the land became part of the Encanto Park and Golf Course.
Since 1935, the Phoenix Parks Departments has used the Norton House for offices. The council approved $70,000 in Historic Preservation Exterior Rehabilitation grant funds and another $70,000 will come from the Parks and Preserves Initiative funds to restore the original double-hung and casement wood windows and any other wood elements.
“The Norton house is one of the few large houses remaining that were once attached to large estates,” Michelle Dodds, historic preservation officer for Phoenix, said in a news release.
Parks and Recreation Director Inger Erickson said, “It’s an exciting project that will help maintain the historic look in this neighborhood.”
