The Arizona Department of Transportation announced it has started training some of its officers who work at ports of entry to respond to opioid overdoses.

Nearly 100 officers from ADOT’s Enforcement and Compliance Division have already been trained to identify opioid overdoses and administer the drug Naloxone to reverse the effects. A spokesperson for ADOT said this is not in response to any specific issue, saying the agency wants to do its part to combat opioid abuse in Arizona.

Gov. Doug Ducey declared a statewide emergency last year to address opioid overdoses and deaths. ADOT has set a goal of training 100 more officers before the year’s end.
