A decision about the Gila River’s future is expected Monday in New Mexico. A state judge has lifted a temporary restraining order, meaning the Interstate Stream Commission can go ahead with its planned meeting.

During that meeting, the commission is expected to decide whether or not to accept more than $100 million in federal funds to develop the Gila River.

Supporters say building diversions along the river could bring relief during droughts, but critics say the plan could harm the river and cost hundreds of millions more than available government money.

Lela Hunt, spokesperson for the Interstate Stream Commission, said Monday’s decision is only the beginning of long process.

"If New Mexico moves forward and at a later date decides this isn’t appropriate for the environment, this isn’t going to fit into our budget, we can then make that decision," Hunt said.

Hunt said if the diversion comes to fruition, a maximum of 8 percent would be taken from the river. The Gila flows through southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona.
