Authorities say the majority of Central American immigrants held at a rural New Mexico detention center over the past six months have been released. The facility in Artesia closed last week.

But not before more than two-thirds of the nearly 1,300 immigrants were released, according to U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement. Another 370 immigrants were deported. And the remaining residents were transferred to another center in Texas.

ICE said it will be expanding its detention facility for adults with children at its South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley. It will ultimately be able to house up to 2,400 people.

This year, a surge of families and unaccompanied minors came into the U.S. illegally. Most were from Central America. But the flow has lessened in recent months.
