More Maricopa County residents are experiencing homelessness.

The results from January’s Point-In-Time count show more than 6,600 people in the region experiencing homelessness — that’s an increase of 316 people from last year.

Amy Schwabenlender, executive director of the Human Services Campus in Phoenix, spoke to The Show more about it.

And on Wednesday, Phoenix Rescue Mission launched its seventh annual Code: Red Summer Heat Relief Campaign — it’s an effort to hand out water, toiletries and other items to residents experiencing homelessness. Nicole Peña, director of community relations for the Phoenix Rescue Mission, also spoke to The Show.

Peña explained how rising temperatures means a ramp-up of work for her group.
