As Americans remember the fallen of wars past this holiday weekend, Arizona Sen. Martha McSally, a veteran herself, appeared on ABC’s "This Week" on Sunday to discuss her legislation aimed at preventing sexual assault in the military.

McSally shared the harrowing tale of her own sexual assault while discussing her legislation in more detail, saying the problem is not who an assault is reported to but how an investigation is prosecuted.

“The problem is that, oftentimes, the case along the way is taking too long. it's like a cancer rotting in the unit while the case goes on. we don't have the absolute best capabilities for the forensics in order to built a case while having also due process for the accused," McSally said.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a fellow veteran, has disagreed with McSally in the past as to how involved commanders should be in the process.

A recent report showed a 38 percent spike in reported sexual assaults in the military since 2016.
