Lettuce contaminated with E. coli has been found in Arizona.

The Arizona Department of Health Services is advising people to avoid eating romaine lettuce grown in Salinas, California.

Dr. Cara Christ says this strain of E. coli has already led to hospitalizations.

"This specific strain of e-coli is also attacking the kidneys and causing people to potentially go into kidney failure. Many patients have had to be hospitalized because of the symptoms associated with this E. coli outbreak," said Christ.

Christ says there have been two cases in Arizona — both requiring hospitalization — but the patients are expected to survive.

If you have purchased romaine lettuce from Salinas, Christ says to throw it away.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says prepackaged salads from Salinas should also be discarded.
